Rebecca Review-001I was elated upon hearing K.A. Linde was writing a fantasy series. She is an even bigger fan of the genre than I am, and that’s saying a lot. Because of that, I went in with extremely high exceptions. After finishing, I am quite pleased and feel it was a solid start to a new series. The imagery used is beautiful and detailed; it felt as if I were transformed into this fascinating world. This story is definitely one that builds slowly and has complex world and character building. Don’t begin expecting nonstop action and endless drama, it is best appreciated as a subtle and gradual buildup of relationship and events. There are clues from the first chapter and layers of storylines that are revealed slowly.

What you seek lies where you cannot seek it.
What you find cannot be found.

It took the majority of the book to finally identify with the heroine, Cyrene. It wasn’t that she was unlikable, I just didn’t really connect with her in the beginning. While I was intrigued by Edric, I never felt he and and Cyrene had an intense connection or relationship that was portrayed. Despite my issue with the romance, there was a intriguing aspect. The supporting cast of characters is outstanding, both the good and evil. The bond and relationships Cyrene creates with her friends is what I admire most throughout this book. Those friendships and her actions to those people make her strong heroine by the end. I absolutely adore Ahlvie, and like Cyrene I feel there is so much to him we have yet to learn. Maelia was a perfect counter balance to Cyrene and would love to have read more about her too.

“Know that I’ll always be here. I’ll always be looking out. I’ll always be your best friend.”

This is the first book I’ve read written by K.A. Linde and she definitely has a new fan. I can’t wait to see what happens in the follow up book, The Bound. There are so many unanswered questions and possible new adventures for Cyrene. I recommend this book to any seasoned high fantasy fan!

Meet The Author-001kalinde copyUSA Today bestselling author K.A. Linde is the author of The Affiliate, the first book in the Ascension Series.  As a military brat, she traveled the world with her family, imaginary friends, and ever-increasing supply of books.  She has spent much of her life dreaming up new worlds and characters and forcing them into uncomfortable, usually life-threatening scenarios.  After graduating from the University of Georgia with a masters degree in political science, she began spending every waking hour putting those characters onto paper.

When not writing, she spends her time dancing, collecting paperbacks in the hopes of filling a Beauty and the Beast style library one day, traveling to visit her friends who live all over the country, and still reading anything she can get her hands on.  She currently resides in North Carolina with her husband and two puppies, Lucy and Riker, where she is hard at work on her next novel.
