…What’s the worst that could happen?
It’s been nine months since Kaitlyn Parker has seen or heard from Martin Sandeke—nine months and five stages of matter. She’s lived through the worst of first-love heartbreak, and is most certainly stronger (and less likely to hide in science cabinets) than ever before.
But now Martin is back. And he wants to be friends. But he’s sending mixed signals to the Bunsen burner in Kaitlyn’s pants.
Will Martin re-capture Kaitlyn’s heart? Can Kaitlyn and Martin ever be just friends? Or, despite an abundance of chemistry, are some bonds just too unstable to endure?

After the heartbreaking cliffhanger from HEAT, I was eager to dive back into more Kaitlyn and Martin. This installment definitely has more angst than the first two. I laughed a little less and chewed my nails much more. Despite the more serious overtone, there is the unmistakable humor and whit that is all Penny Reid. I went from disliking Martin to absolutely loving him, and he truly shines in this book. He matures and develops patience and understanding that he was lacking earlier. He completely steals the show and my heart.
“I don’t want a beautiful week with you. I want a beautiful lifetime.”
The story unfolds several months after the end of HEAT. There is definitely no quick reunification for these two. Kaitlyn continues to be in a vulnerable place as she learns to become the person she truly longs to be. I loved seeing her mature and accept herself. However, for all her brilliance, Kaitlyn is a little dense at times in this book. I was frustrated with her lack to see what was standing right before her. However, in the end, I was happy to see her journey complete and despite my irritation, understand it was the road she had to take.
“Everyone is the main character in their own story.”
I especially enjoyed the relationship between Kaitlynn and Sam. Everyone needs a BFF like this girl. She is fiercely loyal and hilarious. She never fails to give Kaitlynn advice and tough love when she needs it most. Their humorous exchanges often address underlying serious issues. It is one of the many reasons why Reid is such a brilliant writer.
“She’s my BFF, do you know what that means? It means: Boy I will f**k up your face if you mess with my girl.”
I loved this serial immensely and admittedly a little sad to see it end. Reid has shown she writes NA as well as anyone. I certainly cannot wait to see what the “Evil Overlord” comes up with next.

SEX! It all started with sex, between my parents. Personally I don’t like thinking about it, but whatever works for you is a-ok with me. No judgment. The sex happened in California and much of my life also occurred in that state until I moved from the land of nuts (almonds), wine, silicon… boobs, and heavy traffic to the southeast US. Like most writers I like to write, but let’s get back to sex. Eventually I married and gave birth to 2 small people-children (boy-6, girl-4 as of this writing).
By day I’m a biomedical researcher with focus on rare diseases. By night I’m a knitter, sewer, lino block carver, fabric printer, soap maker, and general crafter. By the wee hours of the morning or when I’m intoxicated I love to listen to the voices in my head and let them tell me stories. I hope you enjoy their stories.
